Purpose and Application

Fuel dyes and markers serve distinct but complementary roles in fuel quality management and regulatory compliance. Dyes provide a visible color code to differentiate fuel types, grades, and tax status at a glance, enabling rapid visual identification at the pump, depot, or inspection point. Molecular markers operate invisibly at parts-per-billion concentrations, creating a unique chemical fingerprint detectable only by specific field-deployable readers or laboratory analysis.

Molecular Markers, Covert Anti-Adulteration

Unlike visible dyes, molecular markers are undetectable by color, taste, or smell, and cannot be removed by simple processes such as bleaching or activated carbon filtration. They are used by fuel authorities and distributors to create a secure supply chain audit trail, confirming product origin, identifying adulteration with cheaper fuels, and providing forensic evidence of fuel theft or tax fraud.

  • Applied at sub-ppm concentrations at the terminal, invisible throughout the distribution chain.
  • Detection uses portable field readers (luminescence or spectroscopic) or confirmatory laboratory analysis.
  • Multiple markers can be combined to create a unique fingerprint for a specific supply chain, customer, or market.
  • Particularly relevant where kerosene-into-diesel adulteration is a risk, or where subsidized fuel grades must be differentiated from taxed products (e.g., subsidized solar vs. taxed diesel).

Regulatory Compliance

Many dye and marker programs are mandated by government regulation. Lamurindo supplies dyes and markers that meet applicable national fuel standards and advises on the colors and concentrations required for compliance with Indonesian and regional regulatory frameworks.
