Overview

Organic molybdenum compounds, particularly molybdenum dialkyl dithiocarbamate (MoDTC), are the leading friction modifier chemistry for engine oils requiring improved fuel economy. MoDTC decomposes in the tribological contact to form molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layers on metal surfaces, providing a low-friction lamellar solid lubricant film. This reduces boundary and mixed friction significantly, contributing to real-world fuel savings. MoDTC is compatible with ZDDP and is used at typical treat rates of 0.5–2.0 wt% in engine oil formulations. It is also used in grease formulations to reduce friction in high-load bearings.
