Overview

Rust inhibitors protect metal surfaces from corrosion caused by water contamination in lubricating oil systems. Water enters lubricants through condensation, contaminated new oil, or process contamination, and even small amounts can initiate rust on ferrous surfaces if the oil film lacks sufficient rust-inhibiting properties. Imidazoline-type rust inhibitors are film-forming amphiphilic molecules that adsorb strongly on metal surfaces via their polar head groups, forming a hydrophobic barrier that displaces water and inhibits corrosive attack. This imidazoline rust inhibitor is ashless and biodegradable, suitable for use in environmentally sensitive formulations. It provides protection for both ferrous (steel, cast iron) and non-ferrous metals.
