Reverse Demulsifier

Breaks oil-in-water emulsions so produced water can be cleaned more effectively before discharge, reuse, or reinjection.

Primary Function
Oil-in-water emulsion breaking
Typical Use
Continuous treatment
Target Problem
Stable O/W emulsions
Application Area
Produced-water systems

Overview

When oil droplets remain finely dispersed and stabilized in water, conventional separation can struggle to achieve target water quality. Reverse demulsifiers are used to coalesce or destabilize these emulsions so removal becomes easier.

They are especially useful in water treatment systems where deoiling efficiency, discharge compliance, or reinjection water quality is under pressure.

Selection note: Reverse demulsifier selection should account for oil type, surfactants present, shear history, and the specific separation equipment in service.

Typical Applications

  • Produced-water treatment ahead of discharge or reinjection
  • Systems with persistent oil-in-water stability issues
  • Offshore and onshore facilities seeking lower OIW levels
  • Water handling circuits where downstream treatment is overloaded by oil carryover

Operational Considerations

  • Treatment point and mixing intensity are key to coalescence performance.
  • Chemistry should be screened against representative water and emulsion conditions.
  • Programs often need coordination with clarifier and solids-management chemistry.
